What Are Interleukins?
Interleukins (ILs) are a large family of cytokines — small signaling proteins primarily secreted by leukocytes — that mediate communication between immune cells. First discovered in the 1970s, interleukins regulate immune cell growth, differentiation, activation, and migration, playing central roles in both innate and adaptive immunity.
Each interleukin binds to specific receptors on target cells to trigger intracellular signaling cascades such as JAK-STAT, MAPK, and NF-κB pathways. Types of Interleukins & Their Functions
IL-1 Family
