Function
Catalyzes the initial reaction in O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis, the transfer of an N-acetyl-D-galactosamine residue to a serine or threonine residue on the protein receptor. Has activity toward HIV envelope glycoprotein gp120. Has activity towards EA2, MUC2 and MUC5.
Biological Context
Subcellular Location: Golgi apparatus, Golgi stack membrane (Single-pass type II membrane protein)
Tissue Specificity: Highly expressed in the reproductive tract, principally in the testis and uterus, and to a lesser degree in the cervix with only trace levels in the ovary. Also expressed at high level in sublingual gland, stomach and colon, with more moderate amounts present in the submandibular and parotid gland as well as the kidney
Pathway: Protein modification; protein glycosylation
