Function
Mediates export of organic anions and drugs from the cytoplasm. Mediates ATP-dependent transport of glutathione and glutathione conjugates, leukotriene C4, estradiol-17-beta-o-glucuronide, methotrexate, antiviral drugs and other xenobiotics. Confers resistance to anticancer drugs by decreasing accumulation of drug in cells, and by mediating ATP- and GSH-dependent drug export.
Biological Context
Subcellular Location: Cell membrane (Multi-pass membrane protein); Basolateral cell membrane (Multi-pass membrane protein)
Tissue Specificity: Lung, testis and peripheral blood mononuclear cells
Disease Association: Deafness, autosomal dominant, 77 (DFNA77) : A form of non-syndromic deafness characterized by adult onset of bilateral, postlingual, mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss results from damage to the neural receptors of the inner ear, the nerve pathways to the brain, or the area of the brain that receives sound information. [The gene represented in this entry is involved in disease pathogenesis]
