Function
Ligand for neuropeptide Y receptor type 1 (NPY1R) and neuropeptide Y receptor type 2 (NPY2R). Receptor binding induces adenylate cyclase-inhibiting G protein-coupled receptor signaling, resulting in inhibition of cAMP production. Receptor activation by NPY also leads to an increase of intracellular Ca(2+) levels.
Biological Context
Subcellular Location: Secreted; Cytoplasmic vesicle, secretory vesicle, neuronal dense core vesicle
Tissue Specificity: One of the most abundant peptides in the nervous system. Also found in some chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla
